This is such a beautiful image. The focusing of the camera on features such as the model’s eyes are certainly engaging, and draw the viewer in, creating the ‘space’ I can only assume you referred to in the title by distancing the audience from the background. Despite the narrow focus of the image, it is easy to see this space, and any wider image would no doubt overwhelm the audience or detract from the effect. The lightness of the model’s hair blends in well with the blurred background, creating a sense of distance even in the foreground. The positioning of the model is also excellent – it highlights her facial structure beautifully, but due to the relatively soft shadowing, does not make it appear harsh or cruel. In fact, little of the image appears harsh – the shades of grey are beautifully contrasted with each other to give what appears, at first, to be a predominantly black and white image while retaining warmth through the absence of such stark contrast. It’s just so lovely, and what’s best about it is that it seems to be almost effortless in how it came together.
